In Make Your Job a Calling, we make a case that a key strategy for discerning a calling is to start by understanding your gifts, where “gifts” is defined very broadly to include all of those aspects of what make you unique. There are many types of gifts that people possess, and a holistic approach to exploring gifts should be as expansive and comprehensive as possible. In this series of posts, we briefly explore four types of gifts that psychologists have identified as particularly relevant to understanding what makes people thrive at work: interests, values, personality, and abilities. Although this collection of attributes does not represent a comprehensive picture of gifts—for example, it does not include spiritual gifts described in the New Testament—it captures key domains that research indicates are useful in helping people discern their callings.
